Shanghai has launched three major infrastructure projects this week, including a 10 billion yuan (HK$9.4 billion) expansion of Pudong International Airport, which should give the city a boost in the wake of the Sars outbreak.

The city also has started work on renovating the southern part of the historic Bund area to prepare for the World Expo in 2010, and a two billion yuan exhibition area at a planned 'auto city'.

Shanghai will invest a record 230 billion yuan in fixed assets, half on infrastructure, this year.

Builders have started work on the airport's second runway, which will stretch 3.8km and accommodate larger planes after it is finished next year.

Work on a new terminal, which is part of the expansion project, is scheduled for completion in four years time.

The airport will be able to handle 60 million passengers a year by 2010 in time for hosting the World Expo.
