Head start for Sars welfare fund

Staff and students of Hong Kong International School queued up yesterday to have their heads shaved to help raise money for children who lost one or both parents to Sars.

The shave-in, together with other stunts, raised more than $115,000 for the We Care Education Fund. 'Teachers dyed their hair and beards red and some even allowed students to cut it. They also dressed up as Superman and played the part of rappers,' said a school spokesperson.

HKIS's Middle School has been raising cash for about two weeks for the fund, which was set up by Hong Kong's Social Welfare Department to help more than 40 children who have lost parents. HKIS students performed one-week 'acts of kindness' such as being nice to their siblings and doing the laundry to raise sponsorship cash. The aim of the fund is to provide Sars-affected children with financial assistance as they grow up.

Five teachers and two students at Phoenix International School also lost their hair for the same cause. They expected to raise around $2,000 from their new looks.
