A special envoy of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights might visit Hong Kong next month to discuss the $400 levy on foreign domestic helpers with government officials.
Gabriela Rodriquez Pizarro, UN special rapporteur on the human rights of migrants, has expressed interest in coming to Hong Kong.
But her visit would depend on the government issuing an invitation, said Connie Bragas-Regalado, chairwoman of the Asian Migrants' Co-ordinating Body.
Ms Regalado said she voiced migrant groups' concerns over the levy to Ms Pizarro in Geneva in April during a discussion.
On April 1, the minimum wage of foreign domestic helpers in Hong Kong was cut by $400 to $3,270 a month on new and renewed contracts. A $9,600 levy will be imposed on employers when they sign two-year contracts after October 1, which is offset by the maids' wage cut.
About $1.4 billion generated from the levy will be used to train local domestic helpers.
