A growing demand for health-care services in Guangdong will create new commercial opportunities for the Hong Kong medical profession, experts said yesterday.
The Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce was yesterday urged to form ties with the province's health authorities to gather more information for Hong Kong operators on rules covering investing in the private market in Guangdong.
Lee Shiu-hung, professor of community medicine at the Chinese University, said the demand for private health-care services in Guangdong would surge because an increasing number of Hong Kong people, especially those who have retired, were moving into the region.
Speaking at a chamber luncheon yesterday, Professor Lee said that strengthening cross-border ties could also improve the exchange of information, which could help in controlling infectious disease outbreaks such as Sars.
Professor Lee said the Guangdong health authorities would welcome Hong Kong medical professionals.
'The mainland government definitely relishes the idea of cross-border co-operation, especially when Hong Kong people will invest in private medical facilities,' he said.
