THE Hong Kong Football Association will meet the board of governors of the new national stadium within the next week to discuss the cost of hiring the venue, writes Jeremy Walker.
The governors, including representatives of stadium managers Wembley International and of the landlords, the Urban Council, have fixed a charge of $150,000 a day, or 20 per cent of gate receipts.
FA chairman Stewart Lee said yesterday he would be meeting the governors to propose a block booking of dates at a discount rate.
''If the cost remains at $150,000 we would only be able to stage between 10 and 20 matches there a season,'' said Lee.
''I am optimistic we can negotiate a new rate but it all depends on the attitude of the governing board. If they have the interests of the Hong Kong public at heart they will offer a reduced rate for local sport.
''I am sure we can help them fill some of the empty dates.''
