For years, many men with erectile problems have suffered in silence, unable to discuss an issue that is strictly taboo in Chinese culture.

But organisers of a weekend workshop on erectile dysfunction promise to provide information on the treatment of a problem that affects hundreds of thousands of men in Hong Kong.

The symposium, to be held in Macau on Saturday, is also likely to reveal details of a new drug to counter the condition that is even more effective than Viagra.

Erectile dysfunction, which refers to the repeated inability to achieve or maintain an erection and have sexual intercourse, allegedly affects about 600,000 men in Hong Kong.

The Macau Chinese Medical Association is to hold the joint Hong Kong and Macau event as an 'exclusive educational workshop to get a first-hand experience of the world's innovative treatment of erectile dysfunction'.

During the course of the 90-minute symposium, Chan Tai-ip, a specialist in urology at Macau's Kiang Wu Hospital, will be introducing a new drug to treat the condition. A spokeswoman for the organiser says the drug, Cialis, is similar to Viagra but is effective for up to 36 hours.
