The unforgettable diversions of Amnesia founder

Wang Jianwei

NIMAL JAYAWARDENA'S ENTREPRENEURIAL business interests span music and sports promotion, a nightclub and street parties.

Although he grew up here, he moved to study in the United States before returning five years ago. In his mid-20s, with little business experience, he started the now-established SoHo nightclub Amnesia, which brings in DJs from overseas and spawned Spy magazine, now available in Singapore, New Zealand and Australia.

In 1998, he formed Black Sun Marketing, a consulting firm for the music business. Today the company is under the umbrella of the Matrix Entertainment Group for whom Mr Jayawardena is a partner. He's on the move constantly, representing a range of clients across the region. He is currently working on (Spanish football team) Real Madrid's upcoming Asian tour.

Last year, Mr Jayawardena was named chairman of the SoHo Association, which represents more than 30 businesses in the district.

The same year he was the force behind the SoHo Carnival street party, which pointed to a new understanding in the previously sour relations exhibited between the government and businesses there.

Another carnival will be held this month as a celebration of the retreat of Sars and a way of bringing more residents and tourists to the SoHo area.

The Informer spoke to Mr Jayawardena to find out his suggested best picks for executives in Asia.

Ultimate holiday destination for the harassed exec

New Zealand. You feel relaxed as soon as you get off the plane. Kiwis have a good balance of work and play.

If I get really bored, Eden Park - home of the Auckland Blues rugby team (left) - is about a two minute walk from my home, or I help my mum serve sushi at her shop in Devonport.

Favourite restaurant in Hong Kong for a business luncheon

The Marriott buffet. At least you can stuff your face while your client is boring you to death.

Favoured place in Asia to shop for the best in executive gadgets

Sim Lim Square in Singapore has all the essential tools if you are a geek like me.

Most Apple centres have all that you really need: G4 PowerBook, iPod and user friendly multimedia software, but Sim Lim has the extra bits.

Hong Kong's coolest bar

One-fifth - if you took it out of Hong Kong it would still be able to compete anywhere else in the world, unlike most commercial venues or 'it' places.

Best cocktail in town

A pussyfoot at the Peak Cafe. Non-alcoholic and pink, putting me in touch with my feminine side!

Best haircut in town for the busy executive

The Barber Shop. Conveniently located behind Starbucks on Wellington Street and reasonably priced.

Best place for a hard-working exec to de-stress

Can you do that in Hong Kong?

Best private club in Hong Kong Amnesia, of course. Cool people who are really into their music. It is nice to see that in a money-oriented town.

Favourite gym

New York Fitness - before it vanished in front of my eyes.

Best service from restaurant staff in Hong Kong

Staunton's Wine Bar and Cafe (right). The staff make it a point to know their customers by name. It has a neighbourly feel to it.

Best Hong Kong experience

Spending time with (close friend) Cheryl. Hong Kong has always been about people. In that aspect we are lucky we live in a cosmopolitan city, despite its faults.
