Jobless man dies after hanging himself at home

A jobless man hanged himself at his Sau Mau Ping flat yesterday and was pronounced dead in hospital. He was the third unemployed person to commit suicide in three days. Ko Yung-kan, 55, was discovered by his wife hanging in the bedroom of their Lee Hang House unit in Shun Lee Estate at 2pm. His wife told police her husband was unemployed and had been struggling to pay off debts.

Customs seize $22m in smuggled goods from ship

Customs officers seized $22 million worth of smuggled goods from two containers after intercepting a 500-tonne mainland-bound cargo ship off Tuen Mun. The officers said the consignment, which including computer parts, LCD monitors and audio and video equipment, was destined for Huizhou, Guangdong. Six mainland crew were released after inquiries. Customs officers said they had not made any arrests but they would seek help from mainland authorities to trace the intended recipient of the consignment.

Accident woman, 19, leaps to her death

A woman, 19, threw herself from her 24th-floor flat in Tai Po. The woman was found lying unconscious outside Yee Shun House, Yee Nga Court, at 1.30am. Her parents told police she had been depressed since being injured in a traffic accident last year.
