WHEN FOOTBALL SUPERSTARS like David Beckham first discovered football it was like a revelation - they were born to play.

But for most children playing for the first time, the reaction can be one of frustration: it's just too difficult.

In summer training programmes designed for all ages at home and abroad, football is introduced in a way that gives a good feeling about the game.

Chan Yeung-chong, a leading Hong Kong youth football coach, says first-time players must have a positive experience and come away feeling like they've had some fun.

'You have to capture their interest [and] give them a happy feeling that will make them come back for more,' says the owner of the Giant Soccer Academy and former head coach of football at the Hong Kong Sports Institute.

'Parents often have way too high expectations of their children and expect them to make impossible progress with their skills,' says the locally renowned coach.
