Chan Wai-shing, 48, was transferred together with $1.58 million - part of the stolen money - at the Huanggang border checkpoint in Shenzhen.

Police said another $500,000 had been recovered when officers raided his home in Tuen Mun. It is understood that the remaining money might have been spent when Chan was in hiding in Shenzhen.

Last night, the suspect, who is the tenth to be handed over to Hong Kong police by mainland officials this year, was still being held but had not been charged.

Chan, the former commander of the crew of a Securicor armoured vehicle is suspected of fleeing Hong Kong through the Lok Ma Chau checkpoint shortly before midnight on April 28. Several hours later, his company discovered two bags containing $2.1 million had disappeared from its Cheung Sha Wan headquarters.

The two bags were collected from two Jockey Club off-course betting centres in Mongkok and were part of the takings from the route the crew had worked.
