Web forums for personal digital assistant (PDA) enthusiasts are buzzing with excitement about a new Treo from Handspring, soon to become a part of Palm.

The product was developed before the merger of Handspring and Palm was announced last week and is not a result of a collaborative effort between the two companies. Handspring wonderboy and founder Jeff Hawkins, whom Palm expects to work magic for the newly merged company as Palm's new chief technology officer, has been spotted carrying a new communicator called the Treo 600.

Treocentral.com, an Internet forum on Treo-focused news and gossip, was abuzz with fans' impressions of the new Treo. It is based on the Treo 300, which operates on the PCS network in the United States.

The Treo 600 is apparently a CDMA-based combination mobile phone and PDA, so is nothing for us to get excited about in GSM-based Hong Kong.

However, another discussion on a Yahoo! PDA forum indicated that Handspring is working with European carrier Orange to develop a version of the Treo 600 which would work on Europe's GSM networks.

The buzz about the new device even overshadowed leaks about the new Tungsten T2 from Palm. I found three to four slightly varied impressions of the Treo 600 on the Internet, but except for some differences in the keys of the thumb pad, they look very similar.
