Updated at 6.58pm: Commissioner for Transport, Robert Footman, has rejected Yuen-long minibus drivers' demands to operate on the Route 3 highways, local radio reported on Wednesday. Red minibus drivers threatened earlier this week to stage a drive-slow protest from Yuen Long to Central unless the Government allowed them to operate on the highway and through the Tai lam Tunnel. Mr Footman said allowing red minibuses to operate on the route would be against the Government's long-stand principle of replacing red minibuses with green minibuses - which provide a fixed schedule and price. The Government was planning to open a green minibus route on the highway, he added. He said the Government was willing to discuss the matter with the drivers' coalition and he hoped drivers would express their dissatisfaction using legal methods. Instead of using the Route 3 highway, Yuen Long minibus drivers now use Castle Peak Road to provide services to urban areas like Jordan and Mongkok. The existing journey takes twice as long as using Route 3 and Tai Lam Tunnel.
