Vietnamese worker killed as scaffolding collapses
A Vietnamese man was killed on a Housing Department construction site in Shekkipmei yesterday after he and a colleague fell five storeys when scaffolding collapsed beneath them. Nguyen Thanh Cong, 38, and his Vietnamese colleague, 23, were working on scaffolding at Tung Wing House, which is under demolition in Tai Hang Tung Estate, according to police. His Vietnamese colleague was in a critical condition in Caritas Medical Centre. The dead man's 41-year-old brother, who was working on the ground, was treated for shock. Police suspect the three Vietnamese men were using bogus identity cards. The Labour Department is investigating.
Pair escape with $100,000 in armed bank robbery
Heavily armed police in bullet-proof vests failed to track down two armed robbers who stole $102,550 from the Shanghai Commercial Bank in Mongkok. One of the two masked robbers rushed into the Nathan Road branch, jumped over the counter and snatched the money as staff and customers stood by at 2pm, police said. The other robber acted as lookout before they fled with the money. There was no report of casualties.
Poll on NT taxi fare cuts
The Transport Department has launched a survey on the controversial New Territories taxi fare discounts within the industry which will determine whether the trial scheme will be extended. But in a surprise move, the department said taxi users would also be asked their opinions.
