Your photo and caption 'Strife in the slow lane' (June 19), about a protest against a $100 vehicle departure tax, typifies the cynical attitude of some Hongkongers.
The first four cars are Mercedes Benz, followed by what looks like a Porsche and another Benz. The first two Benz carry Jockey Club badges. These people appear to be doing very well from their cross-border activities, yet whine that 'the proposed tax is not fair'.
I wonder how many of them protested against the $400 monthly levy imposed on our domestic helpers.
Others in Hong Kong are experiencing job losses. These privileged people, however, enjoy the benefits of living here while exploiting cheap mainland labour but are unwilling to contribute to the government during these difficult times.
