Pump up the volume

I've been looking high and low for Nicky Clarke's Hairaromatherapy hair-thickening shampoo but without luck. I bought it in Britain and it comes in a shiny, silver bottle. I'm down to my last drop, help!

Going Limp, Aberdeen

The Dictator rules: Sorry, Flathead, Nicky Clarke products are no longer available in Hong Kong, so you'll have to find a substitute. First, assess the problem. It's likely your hair is 'fine', which doesn't mean 'good'. Other possible enemies are oily roots, product build-up and heavy conditioners. Before you start piling on more gunk, get rid of the residue with a clarifying shampoo such as Neutrogena Anti-Residue Shampoo ($90; Mannings, Festival Walk, 80 Tat Chee Avenue, Kowloon Tong, tel: 2265 8377). Next, try a few light, daily shampoos made for your hair type such as Rosemary Mint shampoo by Aveda ($100; Aveda Lifestyle Day Spa, Hing Wai Building, 36 Queen's Road Central, tel: 3106 2868), followed by the brand's Light Elements styling and finishing products ($200 to $330). To increase body, try Neutrogena's Clean Volume shampoo ($59.90 each; Watson's, Festival Walk, tel: 2180 8481), Phyto's Phytovolume shampoo with yarrow extract ($100; Mannings), or Biolage's Energising Shampoo made with hops, capsicum and panthenol ($80; Mannings). If you can afford it, turn to haircare by another expert: J.F. Lazartigue (EL Beauty, Hing Wai Building 36 Queen's Road Central, tel: 2521 3291), including his Body Giving Shampoo ($188), Hair Volume Tonic ($265) or Hair Body Emulsion ($265).
