Boy hangs himself after television ban

An eight year-old boy last night hanged himself after his mother stopped him from watching television because his father wanted to take a nap.

Police said the father told them that after he woke up just after 9pm he noticed his son hanging by a bath towel behind the toilet door.

The boy was rushed to Northern Hospital in a coma and was admitted in critical condition. He died just after 11pm.

Police said the father, who works on the mainland, returned to his home in Wah Min House, Wah Sun Estate, Fan Ling, at 7pm.

Feeling tired, he retired to the bedroom to take a nap, but was disturbed by the noise of the television his two sons, aged eight and seven, were watching.

Their mother later took them to play in the estate playground until 9pm.

When they returned home, the older boy went into the toilet without saying a word.

Unaware what had happened, the father went to the toilet after he woke up and found his son hanging behind the door.

In a separate incident, a 34-year-old expatriate killed himself by burning coal in his rented flat in Luk Tei Tong on Lantau.

His landlady discovered his decomposed body just after 7.30pm when she went to look for him after he failed to pay his rent.

No death note was found in the flat.
