Some of our university scholars have not been setting very good examples for our children.
A few weeks after a Chinese University contract architect was convicted and fined for growing pot in his Sai Kung flat, a senior lecturer from Baptist University was found guilty of practising a few jump-kicks on a taxi driver following a $11.20 fare dispute.
Perhaps associate management professor Ji Li was imitating his namesake, kung fu star Jet Li, when he beat up driver Lee Yau-wah in March after he was given a $15 receipt after making a $26.20 trip.
On Monday, Dr Li, 47, was fined $3,000, made to pay $500 to his victim as compensation and earned himself a criminal record after he was convicted of common assault.
The incident happened on March 28 at the taxi stand outside the KCRC University station. Dr Li (right), told the court he became angry because his victim had used foul language. He said he was a teacher, well-respected by everyone and had never been insulted in such a way. The judge told him this was poor excuse for an assault.
The university, which is now reviewing the case before deciding whether further action is warranted, should remind him that being a teacher means he ought to set a good example.
