Popular with the thong-and-sarong set, then? Since opening in 2000, the hotel has been inundated with famous visitors including Jerry Hall, Kate Moss, Anna Wintour, Morgan Freeman and Dave Stewart.

So, the interiors are pretty stylish? Designed by Gabriella Giuntoli (who counts Giorgio Armani among her clients) the guest rooms have an exotic Balinese feel, with cinnamon and spice-coloured walls, polished concrete floors, teak furniture and four-posters draped in muslin.

Mmmm, tell us more... All the cottages, bar one, have breathtaking sea views, in addition to private egg-shaped plunge pools, a sun deck and Balinese loungers. The open-air bathrooms have showers with cut-out windows and the exclusive unguents have been specially mixed in an Italian monastery.

Where will it all end? The main house is even more of an attention-grabber with its dramatic roof of elephant grass, breezy verandahs and hand-painted opium bed. Better still, it's populated by white linen-clad staff whisking about with jugs of nutmeg colada.

Clearly, the cocktails are top-notch. What about the food? The open dining room is smack-bang on the beach and the Italian menu is so fresh and zesty it will have you raring to go in no time.

Presumably, there's a full range of activities? The three Ss - sun, sea and sand - are available in abundance (the fourth is, of course, up to you ...). Guests can also dive, snorkel, sail, fish, play tennis, trek to waterfalls and enjoy a round of golf.

Anything else we should know? Laluna is not kiddied up: children over 10 are welcomed during high season, and under 10, on request, during low season.
