An owner of an air-conditioning repair company fell to his death on his birthday yesterday as he tried to fix his workshop's faulty air-conditioner.
The accident happened soon after 9.30am in Kwai Chung when Lee Shing-min, who had just turned 26, took a cake to his business premises on the sixth floor of the Wah Fuk Industrial Building in Kwai Hei Street. He was with his girlfriend and younger brother.
When they arrived, they discovered that the air-conditioner was not working.
Lee clambered on to the outdoor section of the unit, installed on a metal frame, to fix the problem. The metal frame apparently gave way, causing Lee to slip and fall. It was thought that he was not wearing a safety belt.
He plunged down the air well of the building, crashing on to the tin rooftop of a flour company.
The man's brother saw the incident and called police. He and Lee's girlfriend rushed down the building where they found him unconscious.
