The two government officials who were the main targets of outrage laid low yesterday. Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa spent the afternoon working at the Central Government Offices, his press secretary said, even as the masses swirled around the buildings in protest. The spokesman would not say whether the chief executive watched any of the demonstration out of the window or if he saw any of the events on television. Secretary for Security Regina Ip Lau Suk-yee's plans for the day were not revealed by her spokesperson. Both officials attended the flag-raising ceremony and reception for Premier Wen Jiabao at the Convention and Exhibition Centre yesterday morning.
