Money-grabbing comedy comes HK style
THE Hong Kong Repertory Theatre is to re-stage its highly successful Cantonese version of the award-winning drama Other People's Money at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Studio Theatre in September.
The play, which had a successful run earlier this year, is a zany comedy about ruthless money-makers who buy and liquidate troubled companies for profitable re-sale.
The characters include notorious Larry, the ''takeover artist'', factory owner Andrew Jorgenson and his loyal staff.
There is also a bright young lawyer, daughter of the factory owner's ex-lover-cum-assistant, who is hired to fend off Larry's takeover attempt.
Funny, serious, suspenseful and expertly crafted, the comedy was also made into a successful movie.
Dr Daniel Yang, director and translator of the Cantonese version, said: ''When Other People's Money was enjoying its long runs in New York and London, it became the subject of conversation at cocktail and dinner parties of the business world.
''Hong Kong, as a leading finance centre with an active stock market and plentiful takeover deals, ought to share a similar interest in the play.'' Other People's Money will be staged from September 10 to 14, and 16 to 19, at 7.30 pm daily. There will be three matinee performances on September 12, 18 and 19 at 2.30 pm.
Tickets at $50 and $70 are available at all URBTIX outlets. For reservations call 734-9009.
