This explosive occasion, to be staged by Hit Radio at the Hong Kong Coliseum, will recognise the effort of local and overseas singers and groups in the past year.

Said Hit Radio's channel director Joe Chan: ''The Hit Awards are the annual report cards singing artistes receive.'' The battle is now gathering heat as the list of titles contestants has whittled down to a final five in each category - Chinese, English and Japanese.

Andy Hui is nominated for Top Male Artist, alongside the territory's ''Four Big Pop Kings'', Jacky Cheung, Leon Lai, Andy Lau and Aaron Kwok. Hui has expressed a hope to be the ''Fifth King'' soon.

The Top Female Artist category includes last year's gold clincher Sally Yeh, Sandy Lam, Vivian Chow, Veronica Yip and newcomer Fayne Wong.

Wong is not confident. ''The other four are all established and have a lot of fans. I'm rather new and need more experience.'' Making it into the final of Top New Act - male artist, are names like Luk Ka-jun and Kelvin Cheng Ka-wing. Karen Tong, Linda Wong Hing-ping and Jessica Chau appear in the female category.

Grasshopper, Beyond, Tai Chi are among those contending for the Top Band/Group title.
