Lather up

Choosing the right shaving cream or gel can make all the difference between a painful shave, or a slick, smooth look.

Schick Gel, normal skin

(195g/ $45.90)

Comes out toothpaste blue and turns into a white foam. Small amount goes a long way. Gives a smooth shave. Aloe vera leaves skin feeling soft.

Gillette Gel, for sensitive skin (195g/ $43.90)

Gillette has improved its formula over the last five years. This one if seriously foamy - one little quirt lathers up into a bug ball of foam, which really smoothes the skin and makes shaving less painful. Smells great too. With aloe vera.

Mandom Fresh Shave

(170g/ $28.90)

Smells okay, and is creamy, but doesn't make for a smooth shave. Could be dangerous for first-time shavers.

Gatsby Cool Facial Foam (130g/ $23)

Japanese and very trendy. Comes out like toothpaste and takes a good minute to lather - with practically no foam, more of a cream. Leaves your face with a tingling cool sensation.

Gillette Foamy,

Menthol shaving cream

(175g/ $33.90) If you like a thick foam, this is the one for you. It lathers up fast and gives a smooth shave.
