Hotel development is expected to get a boost from a government forecast that 28,000 to 41,000 more rooms will be required by 2016.

The number of hotel rooms could double in the next two decades as developers seek to meet demand. Hong Kong has 38,919 hotel rooms at present.

The Planning Department has earmarked a 1.2-hectare waterfront commercial site, the existing International Mail Centre, in Hunghom for hotel development.

Meanwhile, the latest Metroplan review recommended the introduction of specific land-use zoning to safeguard sites for hotel use in prime locations.

Analysts say, however, that increasing the number of approvals for hotel developments on former industrial sites could result in excess supply. They said specific hotel zoning would reduce land-use flexibility and depreciate land value.

The government expects Disneyland Hong Kong to attract about 1.4 million more tourists to Hong Kong in its first year of operation. It expects about 3.4 million tourists to visit the theme park in its first 12 months. The number of tourists is forecast to rise to 7.3 million after 15 years.
