Lawmakers consider bringing a motion before the end of the legislative year

Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa could yet face a no-confidence vote in the next two weeks.

While the Legislative Council holds its final weekly sitting today before its summer recess, the legislative year will not end until later this month.

Some lawmakers are considering introducing a motion in the coming weeks stating they have no confidence in the chief executive.

Lee Cheuk-yan, of the Confederation of Trade Unions, and Emily Lau Wai-hing, of The Frontier, said they would consider pursuing such a motion in the light of what they called Mr Tung's failure to govern, which they said had led to the recent political crisis surrounding the national security bill.

The final Legco sitting is expected to last a few days, since a number of government bills will need debating. But the possibility exists for legislators to call another meeting, since the final date of the legislative year has yet to be gazetted by the government.

Under Legco's rules of procedure, members should be given at least two weeks' notice of a meeting. Lawmakers can also call a meeting at less than 14 days' notice to deal with 'urgent business'. Legco President Rita Fan Hsu Lai-tai would have the final say on any such meetings.
