The joint venture between Cosco Pacific and Hutchison Whampoa handled 115,400 teu (20ft equivalent units) last month, compared with 130,300 in the same month last year.

'June 2002 is a record month for us. We are comparing with a very high base last month. Our performance is in line with the market,' Cosco Pacific deputy managing director Kelvin Wong Tin-yau said.

Cosco-HIT handled 702,500 teu in the first half, up a comparative 4.7 per cent. Mr Wong said: 'We are cautiously optimistic about our performance this year. The second half, with the Christmas rush season, will be busier than the first half.'
