But for a day's delay, Scott and Karin Thompson's transcontinental love story might have had a happier ending. Instead, because of the government's new rule requiring dependants to obtain a work visa before getting a job, Karin's dream of being able to have her own career and income have been thwarted. After getting married in Karin's home country of Switzerland on June 20, the Thompsons arrived back in Hong Kong on June 28 but could not make it to the Immigration Department to register her as a dependant until July 2, a day after the rule came into force. When they were told of the new rules, Karin was crestfallen. 'She was in tears,' Scott said. He said the couple had made a long-term commitment to Hong Kong by buying a house in Sai Kung with a 12-year mortgage. 'We realise she can work but it's just not as easy as it used to be,' he said. Scott, a 34-year-old Australian who has been based here as a pilot for six years, said he wished the government had given some warning.
