Ashanti Chapter II (Murder Inc) The pretty frontwoman of Irv Gotti's Murder Inc keeps a tight schedule. Only a year since the release of her eponymous debut album - and recording with Ja Rule in any spare moments - Ashanti has churned out her second chapter. Gotti's number one muse lends her charming, dreamy, honey-sweet voice to another round of R&B, retro-pop, radio-friendly hits. And believe it or not, there's not a single track on here with Mr Rule. Smart move, given the two were getting a little close to a duet. Rock Wit U (Awww Baby) and Sweet Baby are classic examples of Ashanti magic. Check out her soothing crooning, dramatic melodic play, soundbites plugging Murder Inc and use of the 'B'' word. Did someone say formulaic? Sure, but it all works. Fans of Ashanti's first album will see how she has matured, upped the soul factor and carved out her easily recognisable style. That said, it is a little worrisome that one of the best tracks is a rehash of the 1980s favourite, I Found Lovin'. Chapter II was said to be banged out to define the sizzling sounds of summer. That must explain the beach shots in the cover booklet that opens out to become a poster of Ashanti in a white swimsuit. And that could also explain why some tracks sound like they would fare better on a remix album. But who cares? It works.
