WITH A Gibson Les Paul guitar in her hands and a live band behind her, popular Taiwanese singer Shino Lin brands herself a rock singer. Nevertheless, in Shino 1st Best, a comprehensive review of Lin's singing career, Lin wants to show people that she is not only good at rock. In this double CD all her rock tunes are featured in the Ultimate Rock disc, while Ultimate Tenderness covers her traditional soppy ballads. But it's obvious that rock suits her best. The 11-track Ultimate Rock proves that Lin is a gifted singer. In Can't See Can't Hear, her powerful vocals overshadow the subtle but fancy musical arrangements. She delivers the extreme notes gracefully in Annoyed. Her Tears is one of her best, in which she sings a sad love story with a catchy tune. The only Cantonese track Dolls Love the World is a heavy rock ballad featuring a melody with a Chinese flavour. Ultimate Tenderness is much less attractive. Despite Lin's stunning voice, these tragic love songs do not sound as fresh as her rock anthems. One example is the theme to the movie Tempting Heart. It's a decent song, but not exciting. If Lin is deciding what she should do with her future, it's obvious she should pursue rock, and put her softness aside.
