At 1am today, Koni was centred about 530km south of Hong Kong and was forecast to move northwest at about 18km/h in the direction of Hainan island.

According to the Observatory, Koni will be closest to Hong Kong this morning, raising the possibility of the strong wind No3 signal being hoisted. It has forecast stronger winds when Koni skirts about 400km to the southwest of Hong Kong.

The Observatory warned that precautions against damage should be taken and drains cleared to avoid obstruction. People hoping to visit islands were advised to keep themselves updated on the weather.

Clouds and scattered showers are forecast for today. Temperatures will range from 27 to 30 degrees Celsius. There will be moderate to fresh easterly winds, which will be gusty at times and should strengthen later. Scattered showers are expected tomorrow, with winds moderating gradually and temperatures of up to 31 degrees.
