Tony Blair ducked out of Hong Kong ahead of the typhoon yesterday, leaving behind a vote of confidence in the city.

The British prime minister said Hong Kong was the best example of a place able to face global economic challenges and make political changes without rocking stability.

He also addressed China's economy, the environment and the war on terrorism, and hailed news that Saddam Hussein's sons had been killed by US troops.

Referring to the war on Iraq and the resistance to globalisation, Mr Blair stressed that Hong Kong was the right place to make a speech defending globalisation, noting how political changes could be made without compromising stability.

'What is fascinating about Hong Kong is that it is the perfect example of both the economic and political challenges,' he told a British Chamber of Commerce luncheon.
