Medical staff at public hospitals will finally get the all-clear to shed layers of protective clothing in low-risk areas from Friday - two months since the last new Sars case was recorded.

But some frontline workers worry that getting back to the 'new normal' after the Sars outbreak, which killed eight health-care workers, would create another round of conflict with hospital managers.

Lui Siu-fai, services director for risk management and quality assurance at New Territories East hospitals, said the Hospital Authority would soon announce its public hospitals' post-Sars arrangement.

He added that it was an appropriate time to make the lives of medical staff easier.

'We have not seen any new case since June 2. The medical staff cannot wear all this gear forever. They have been sweating so much being wrapped by the layers and layers of clothes,' he said.

Precautions at general wards will be eased, meaning medical staff will only have to wear a mask and gloves in some situations during work.
