Regina, we hardly knew you. I have changed my mind about the former security secretary. Maybe there really is a silent majority out there, or at least a fair number, who supported Regina 'Broom-head' Ip Lau Suk-yee. Legions of hidden fans and secret admirers surfaced this week at her office in Central to pay tribute. From teenage girls to middle-aged professionals and pensioners, each group queued to present gifts and waited for autographs from the much-maligned one-time security chief, who ended a tumultuous 28-year career in government on Thursday. Believe it or not, apparently many men think she has enormous sex appeal. Recall a Valentine's Day survey of MSN.com.hk in February, which had internet voters choosing Ip and her colleague, Chief Secretary Donald Tsang Yam-kuen, as the most ideal lovers within Hong Kong's halls of power. I have personally come across several of her male admirers. And why not, despite, or because of, her legendary hairstyle? She is smart and tough, drives a Porsche, paints her toenails, reads Gabriel Garcia Marquez and quotes Winston Churchill. The 52-year-old widow would make a great intellectual companion and much, much more.
