South Korean electronics giant Samsung has carved out an early niche in the growing notebook computer market with its X series of super-thin and light Centrino-based laptops. The latest addition to the expanding X family is the X05, pitched as the cheap one of the lot.
At a glance, there is little difference between the X05 and the first of the series, the X10. In terms of specifications, there is very little difference except in weight and thickness. While the X05 has a DVD combo drive like the X10, it uses a deeper drive, adding bulk to its overall form. The X05 weighs 2kg and is 24.4mm thick, whereas the X10 is marginally lighter and thinner at 1.8kg and 23.8mm.
The X05 runs the Intel Pentium M processor and the Intel 855GM Integrated Graphic Controller. The X10 comes with an embedded Nvidia GeForce4 Go 440 (64MB) graphics chip so it is the better laptop of the two for multimedia and gaming.
If you are looking for a thin and light laptop for work on the go with some multimedia use, the X05 would suffice. It takes the Sony Memory Stick and comes with FireWire and Ethernet ports. Like the X10, the X05 has a large 14-inch LCD display.
