It was difficult because of the heavy traffic on Garden Road in Central but some pedestrians were convinced they could hear strains of Happy Birthday coming from the top office of the Cheung Kong Centre yesterday.
This is because July 28 is the birthday of Hutchison Whampoa chairman Li Ka-shing. According to a company source, birthdays are generally business-as-usual for the 75-year-old tycoon and yesterday looked like it was to be no exception.
'It's always business as usual for Mr Li,' said our source.
Reported to be worth US$7.8 billion, Mr Li, dubbed Superman by the media either because of his ability to fly faster than a speeding bullet or his acute business acumen, was born under the Chinese zodiac sign of the Dragon.
Asked if he had received any cards and perhaps a cake, our source confessed she was not close enough to the big man to have a piece of his cake and eat it.
'I dare say there is [plenty of cards and a cake] but I'm unlikely to see any of it,' she said.
