A serial rapist who videotaped his attacks on three female students has argued before the Court of Appeal against his life sentence.
Cheung Lai-man, now 35, was jailed for life last October after he pleaded guilty to three counts of rape, carried out between November 1997 and May last year while the victims, aged 12, 20 and 21, were on their way to school or university.
The Court of First Instance heard that Cheung videotaped the attacks, which occurred at knifepoint in bushes along foothpaths in Sha Tin and Tseung Kwan O and in a makeshift shelter constructed specifically for Cheung's purposes on a hillside in Sha Tin.
Cheung, wearing a balaclava and gloves, ambushed the victims, threatened them with a knife, blindfolded them and tied them up.
In sentencing, Deputy Judge Alan Wright deemed the sex attacks the work of a 'truly evil man' and ruled out parole for 20 years.
He also said psychiatric and psychological reports concluded that Cheung would remain a danger to society.
