It will help build the western corridor link to Shenzhen
Construction company Gammon Skanska has won a $2.2 billion contract to construct the bridge for the western corridor linking Hong Kong to Shenzhen, known as the Deep Bay Link.
Gammon will build the Hong Kong portion of the bridge. Another contract will be awarded by mainland authorities for the Shenzhen half.
Executives at Jardine Matheson, which is a half owner of Gammon Skanska along with Skanska, confirmed the contract award yesterday.
Passenger and freight traffic to and from China is forecast to increase dramatically as Hong Kong's economy becomes more closely integrated with the mainland.
The new Sheung Shui to Lok Ma Chau Spur Line, which is being fast-tracked for completion next year, will provide much-needed relief at the Lowu rail crossing. The western corridor route, scheduled for completion in 2005, will add additional capacity.
