Where to ... enjoy some good ol' American-style dining

Winnie Yeung

George Ferris, the acting head of the United States Foreign Agricultural Service in Hong Kong, thinks choosing a restaurant is about more than good food; the ambience and service are also important. He suggests the following five restaurants for an American dining experience.

Dan Ryan's Chicago Grill, Pacific Place, Admiralty, tel: 2845 4600. 'At least once a month I have to get my Philly cheesesteak 'fix' and Dan Ryan's is the place. I also like the unlimited refills of ice tea, [which is] a common feature in most restaurants in the States but too rare in Hong Kong.'

California Restaurant, California Tower, 30 D'Aguilar Street, Lan Kwai Fong, tel: 2521 1345 (pictured). 'It is home to one of Hong Kong's most creative chefs [Jason Hyatt]. There are always great things on the menu and it has a nice atmosphere, especially if you can get a booth looking out onto Lan Kwai Fong.'

Cafe Deco Bar & Grill, Peak Galleria, 118 Peak Road, The Peak, tel: 2849 5111. 'Whenever I have friends or family visiting from the States, particularly if they're first-time visitors, I like to take them to Cafe Deco. Although the menu is international, they always have a good selection of US beef, the only beef I'll eat. In addition to the excellent food, my visitors always love the world-class view of the harbour.'

W's Entrecote, 13/F Food Forum, Times Square, Causeway Bay, tel: 2506 0133. 'Although most of the menu is French, W's Entrecote is a great place to get US beef, which is always on the menu. A great place for lunch or dinner when shopping or seeing a movie at Times Square.'

Post 97, 1/F, 9 Lan Kwai Fong, tel: 2186 1817. 'I never get tired of eating at Post 97. The food is always so good, and although [the menu is] international, [it] often features American favourites such as burgers. I know so many wonderful staff there - that adds a lot to the dining experience.'
