Internet giant Yahoo! hopes to increase its revenue from Hong Kong with the launch of Yahoo! Enterprise Solutions (Y!ES).

Y!ES is a series of value-added services and applications aimed at corporate customers. It was launched in Hong Kong last week.

The company hopes the new services will appeal to businesses looking to take advantage of the recently signed closer economic partnership agreement (Cepa) between Hong Kong and the mainland.

Three main services are on offer; portal solutions, broadcast solutions - such as web casting - and an enterprise edition of the popular Yahoo! Instant Messenger.

The company also provides professional services such as usability, user adoption and taxonomy consulting.

However, Alfred Tsoi, general manager of Yahoo! Hong Kong said Y!ES was not just for large corporations.

He said the company also targeted small and medium-sized enterprises and would provide web hosting, domain name registration and business e-mail account services through select partners.

Portal solutions covers the creation of a specialised enterprise portal allowing employees easy access to corporate information resources.

Yahoo! Messenger Enterprise Edition is similar to Yahoo's original instant messaging tool but has many additional features to meet the needs of corporate users such as greater security and a link facility to the company's e-mail system, so the directory of users can replace the traditional contact list.

The application will be available on a subscription basis.

The price has not yet been fixed, but Mr Tsoi expected it to be about US$30 per user, per year.

Meanwhile, portal and broadcast solutions will be charged on a per-project basis.

Mr Tsoi said Cepa's signing meant many companies would be opening or expanding offices in the Pearl River Delta and that would 'create more communication needs'.

Yahoo! is one of the best known brands on the Internet and the company hopes name recognition will help it to promote Y!ES.

However, Mr Tsoi said the company had to overcome the public's perception of it as a consumer-oriented firm.

'This is a real challenge, but it is also an advantage that we are so well known among consumers,' he said, adding potential corporate clients would have a favourable perception of the Yahoo! brand.

'We need to make them aware that this is something we are doing right now,' he said.

Y!ES has been launched in the United States and Mr Tsoi hoped the existing client list - which includes HSBC, Cisco Systems and Ford - would encourage potential clients.

Y!ES is also available in the mainland, Taiwan, Singapore, Australia and Britain.
