Yao Ming faces tall order of reviving our post-Sars fortunes
The heavy artillery was yesterday wheeled out in the public relations battle to put post-Sars Hong Kong back on the tourism map, with Chinese basketball star Yao Ming arriving for an exhibition match to be played tomorrow.
The 2.25m centre, visiting for the first time since becoming one of the world's most famous athletes by joining the NBA, says he does not remember how many times he has been to Hong Kong - but each time he is greeted by more screaming fans. 'Every time I come back things are different. I used to love how the plane would hover above the skyscrapers before landing at the old airport. I miss that feeling,' said Yao.
The 22-year-old will play with the Chinese national team against the Melbourne Tigers at the Hong Kong Coliseum.
Sporting a band-aid covering eight stitches on his left brow - caused by an injury during practice - Yao looked desperately shy as he smiled politely for the cameras.
Speaking of his first season with the Houston Rockets, Yao said he had adapted to life in the United States. 'Last season I concentrated on familiarising myself with the environment but I'm sure I will learn more,' Yao said.
Yao said his devotion to the sport left him little time for anything else in his life. 'Maybe I should have more hobbies, such as fishing or travelling,' he joked.
