Hewlett-Packard has launched two new iPaq Pocket PCs, both with integrated Bluetooth. New models include the HP iPaq Pocket PC h1940, a slim and budget-priced Pocket PC, and the HP iPaq h5550, the most power-packed handheld yet, with 128 megabytes of Ram.
Both models run Microsoft Windows Mobile 2003 software, the updated Pocket PC operating system.
The iPaq h5550 truly stole the show at the launch last week because of its PC-like specs. Design-wise, it scores points on simplicity and ergonomics. The h5550 was selected to support wireless communications on the TransOrbital TrailBlazer, the first commercial mission to be approved by the United States government to explore, photograph and land on the moon early next year.
Both new iPaqs feature a Secure Digital expansion slot. Bundled software with the devices includes the iPaq Image Viewer, a small but simple-to-use program for image viewing and slide show creation. Both models will also come included with mobile printing software so users wirelessly print e-mail attachments, documents or photos from the iPaq to a Bluetooth enabled HP printer.
The h1940 is as slim and sleek as its predecessor, the h1910, weighing just 124 grams without compromising on features. It comes with 64MB of Ram and the new Samsung 266 megahertz chip.
A synchronisation cable is included with the device, and a variety of optional accessories are available, including a USB cradle with an extra battery slot for charging, extra stylus, a spare lithium-ion battery, auto adapter and a variety of cases.
The h1940, at HK$2,780, is a real steal. The h5550 priced at HK$5,380, is almost the cost of a desktop PC. You will quickly understand why it's so expensive once you check out its features. The h5550 is the first Pocket PC to include 128MB of Ram. It has a thermal fingerprint reader for greater security and 802.11b wireless LAN technology.
