Notorious gangster Yip Kai-foon got married in Stanley Prison last week with his visiting mainland wife, whom he had previously married under a false name while on the run across the border.

It is understood that the wheelchair-bound Yip, who was once the most wanted man in Hong Kong, was allowed to don his own clothes and exchange rings with his wife during the ceremony, which was witnessed by his lawyer.

But Yip, 41, would have had to hand over his wedding ring to his wife or have it kept by the Correctional Services Department after the ceremony as prisoners are not allowed to wear jewellery.

His marriage registration last week will enable his wife to apply for a one-way permit to settle in Hong Kong.

Yip is also said to have a daughter on the mainland.

He needed to pay about $15,000 to have his wedding ceremony outside the marriage registry, including $5,000 to get a registrar of marriages to travel to the jail.

Yip, who was sentenced to 18 years in jail in 1985 for firearms offences, became Hong Kong's most-wanted man after he made a daring escape in 1989 from Queen Mary Hospital, where he was receiving treatment.
