Kittens do not have to be fat to look adorable. Yang Shanshen's portrait of cats beams with life. Yang is the sole surviving member of the four heavenly lords of the Lingnan stylists. From flowers to birds, insects to fishes, fowls to beasts, all images dance with the spirit in Yang's contemporary Chinese paintings.
He has also derived his own style of calligraphy, which reflects the authentic Lingnan technique of tree branch drawing. When it was first introduced, it shocked viewers by its grotesque waywardness.
Today Yang is still active in forging ahead in his art.
Representing Cosmic Energy - Eminent Works of Yang Shanshen is now at the CityU gallery on 6/F, Amenities Building, City University, until September 30. It is open to public from 10am to 7pm.
