The all-American answer to Harry Potter, from Pulitzer Prize-winning Chabon. Summerland is set on Clam Island, Puget Sound, and tells of one harrowing summer for 11-year-old Ethan Feld and friends Jennifer and Thor. Ethan's life is a misery because he is a terrible baseball player, but one rainy day he meets the ferishers - magical baseball-loving little folk, who need him to save the world from the evil Coyote by playing baseball against giants, 'werefoxes', 'skrikers', and graylings.

Critics say: 'It has the body of a grown-up novel and the head of a prodigiously gifted children's book.' David Kippen, the San Francisco Chronicle.

Pros: Amazing magic, adventure, terror and triumph.

Cons: The first half is bogged down in explanations about the fantasy world.
