THIS WILL BE the 10th consecutive University Games for Hong Kong. But the SAR has never won a medal at the event. Three years ago Rebecca Chiu Wing-yin took the women's squash silver medal at the World University Championships - a similar competition which includes sports that are not part of the Universiade programme.
'The Games are a fantastic experience when you are a university student. I have great memories of 2000 in the Czech Republic,' said Chiu, now Asia's No 1 and a world top-20 ranked player.
'But I wish I had won the gold! It was so close - I lost the fifth and deciding set 8-10.'
'The students will have a brilliant time. It's not elite competition, but it is the best young athletes in the world meeting in one city for two weeks. They will meet a lot of people and have some great memories.' Women's volleyball team member Carmen Leung Ka-man went to the 2001 University Games in Beijing. She said she is looking forward to staying at the athletes' village.
'It's a great feeling to represent Hong Kong. You get to know so many different cultures. The opening ceremony will be great,' she said.
