Sony builds edge on design

Sony is keeping people interested in buying its personal digital assistants (PDAs) by improving design constantly.

Remember the old Clie NZ90 with its slick, rotating display, charcoal-black chassis and built-in camera? Sony does it again with the Clie PEG-UX50, its smallest and lightest.

Measuring 4.1 inches by 3.5 inches by 0.7 inch and weighing 175.77 grams, the UX50 is so tiny you can fit it in your pocket without an ugly bulge.

The UX50, which runs Palm operating system version 5.2, has video recording and playback capability with the integrated digital video recorder. It also records audio and plays MP3 files. Like most advanced phones these days, it has polyphonic alerts to remind you of the day's appointments.

The device has an integrated 640x480 digital camera with 3x digital zoom, in its clamshell design.

An illuminated QWERTY keyboard complete with a dedicated row for numbers goes easy on your eyes. One grouse I have about the keyboard is the keys are placed close together so the tendency of hitting two buttons at a go is quite high. For navigation, use the Jog Dial, a back button, and four quick-launch buttons for common applications.
