Mind the gap - or you might find yourself facing a $2,000 fine.

The MTR is threatening to impose a penalty it has never used before in its latest crackdown on selfish commuters.

Safety guide posters have been posted at MTR platforms stating: 'For your safety and the safety of other passengers don't rush into the train or block the train door on the sound of the alarm. Entering or exiting from the train after the door has started to close is an offence under the MTR by-law. The maximum penalty is a $2,000 fine.'

A spokeswoman for the MTR said the corporation launched a safety campaign every year to educate passengers, and this month it chose to highlight the penalty for breaching door etiquette.

She explained that the penalty, along with others for smoking and lying down on a train, exist in the by-laws even though no passenger had ever been prosecuted.

However, the spokeswoman said a written warning had been issued to one passenger for 'rushing at a door' this year, adding that verbal warnings had been given from time to time over the years.
