Thirteen are jailed and two get death terms in the same week over scandals
Punishments dished out to 15 former bank employees this week in the fallout of two scandals - two were sentenced to death and 13 jailed - signals the state's intention to clean up the sector, one analyst says.
On Thursday, three bank employees who misappropriated more than 300 million yuan (HK$282 million) were sentenced to up to 16 years' jail in Beijing, mainland media said.
Li Huiming, 45, ex-sub-branch head of the Huaxia Bank, was found guilty of attracting 345 million yuan in deposits without registering the funds with the bank, Xinhua said. He illegally loaned the money to a firm that bribed him.
The No.1 Intermediate People's Court of Beijing sentenced Li to 16 years in imprisonment on Thursday, the agency said.
Guo Jianjun and Guo Yi, Li's two assistants received jail terms of 16 and seven years respectively. The court also found they forged 54 deposit receipts in the crime.
Xinhua said their embezzlement and shoddy loan scheme had resulted in a loss of 200 million yuan for the bank.
