I agree with 'Political circuses' (August 22) that Hong Kong's parties do not offer candidates worth voting for.
But surely this is an argument in favour of universal suffrage, not against it.
There is a huge gap in the lineup. The Democratic Alliance for Betterment of Hong Kong is a front for the ruling party in Beijing, with a constituency among the publicly subsidised grassroots. The Democrats and The Frontier know a lot about unconstructive posturing but nothing about economics or policy. The Liberals are driven only by the narrow interests of cartels.
There is no party to represent the interests of taxpayers, consumers, the middle class and the small entrepreneurs - people who want government that is limited, fair, responsive and on good terms with Beijing.
There are people who could lead such a party and fill this gap. But they will not run for powerless posts.
