CSL is the first operator in Asia to sell Nokia's second Edge-enabled handset, the Nokia 6220, but denies reports in the Chinese press that it will roll out its Edge network this month.

CSL spokesperson Isabella Cheung said the carrier's efforts were still focused on driving demand for its general packet radio services (GPRS) offering.

'We'll be rolling out Edge in phases, as and when we see the demand. We have not committed to any timeline,' she said.

She added that the firm's GPRS network was operating at far from maximum capacity.

Edge, or enhanced data GSM (global system for mobile communication) environment, is a communications technology that delivers broadband-like data transfer speeds to mobile devices.

It allows Edge-enabled mobile users to connect to the internet and send and receive data, including digital images, web pages and photographs, three times faster than with a GPRS network. Edge technology will support peak data rates up to 118 kilobits per second with average data rates of 75kbps, compared with 40kbps for GPRS.
